Universal Broadband Public Policy Shift

I recently noticed an article in Roll Call by Bruce Mehlman and Larry Irving, Co-Chairmen of the Internet Innovation Alliance commenting on the dramatic and positive public policy shift for universal broadband. It seems as if it was just yesterday that there was no national broadband strategy and no real understanding of why it is critically important for economic development and our national security.
Today, the Federal Communications Commission is actively engaged and leading this important effort. With $60-80 billion invested annually by the private sector and the public investment offered by the recovery legislation, we have an unprecedented opportunity to offer broadband service to everyone in the country so that all may equally benefit from it. Will they though? Even with equal access, the rapid evolution of technology will leave many behind, particularly the small businesses of America - that critical segment in our country who create the jobs and will lead the way to economic stability and recovery.
These entrepreneurs, if engaged, and if not hamstrung by unnecessary regulatory requirements, will do what they do best - innovate. So much of our future depends on technological innovation. Without innovation, without technological advancements because of broadband, our progress in every important policy and economic sector (such as healthcare and energy and the environment) will be severely hampered. WIPP calls for a national broadband strategy; WIPP calls on the FCC to provide an environment free of regulation and conducive to innovation; and WIPP members stand ready to participate.
